Otago Polytechnic Creative Writing Courses
Otago Polytechnic (Dunedin) offers two fiction writing courses each year:
The Theory and Practice of Short Fiction Writing
This 30 hour course is taught by Paddy Richardson, a former Otago University Burns Fellow and creative writing teacher, and Maxine Alterio, a fiction and non-fiction writer and tertiary educator. Course content includes technical considerations, editing skills, analysis techniques, feedback processes and marketing strategies. Content is delivered using a range of interactive teaching and learning approaches. Each session involves theoretical components, practical writing activities and opportunities to give and receive feedback.

The Theory and Practice of Long Fiction Writing
This 40 hour course is taught by Paddy Richardson, Maxine Alterio, Jackie Ballantyne, Dianne Pettis, Bill O'Brien and Vanda Symon. Course content includes theoretical principles of long fiction, analysis techniques, rewriting skills, feedback processes, editing skills and marketing strategies. Content is delivered using a range of interactive teaching and learning methods which explore various technical and creative aspects of novel writing.
