Wellington Sonnet Competition 2008

People who enter the Wellington Sonnet Competition 2008, sponsored by New Zealand Post, will be in to win $1000 for a fourteen-line poem about Wellington.  There will be second and third prizes of $500 and $250, and $50 for each of ten runners up.  Entries close on 22 September 2008.

The Wellington Sonnet Competition 2008 is organised and administered by the small group of volunteers that oversees the ongoing development of the Wellington Writers Walk along Wellington’s waterfront and has the enthusiastic support of Wellington’s Mayor, Kerry Prendergast:

“The Wellington Writers’ Walk features in many publications and documentaries about our vibrant city,” she says, “and what could be more fitting than an associated competition that will deliver some amazing, inspired and amusing sonnets about Wellington?”

John Allen, Chief Executive of New Zealand Post says, “Our organisation is pleased to sponsor the Wellington Sonnet Competition 2008, which is believed to be the first of its kind for Wellington.  The Wellington Writers Walk is an iconic installation and the volunteer effort required for its continuance is deserving of our support.”

Chairperson of the Wellington Writers Walk Committee, Rosemary Wildblood, says that the Wellington Writers Walk, one of many initiatives of the New Zealand Society of Authors, operates on a very tight budget.

“By paying a $10 entry fee (plus $5 for each additional poem submitted) people will have the chance of winning a prize and seeing their work in print and it will also be a fun way for them to support the ongoing development of the Wellington Writers Walk.”

Entry forms and conditions of entry can be downloaded from the New Zealand Society of Authors website www.authors.org.nz or from New Zealand Post website www.nzpost.co.nz from Friday, 8 August 2008.
